What is it

Lunar New Year is an important event in the Chinese calendar. It is a festival celebrated to mark the beginning of the new year in the Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Spring Festival.

How is it celebrated in Sydney

This year’s Chinese New year festival will be held in Sydney City, Haymarket from 6th February to 21 February. So make sure to add this cultural event to your calendar and come along and join in with the celebrations for the Chinese New Year festivities.

There will be lots to do at this colourful and lively arts festival including cultural events, stalls, exhibitions, entertainment and children’s activities. There will also be lots of music and dancing performances.

Come and be part of the fun as Sydney city comes alive with big lunar lanterns, light displays, Chinese decoration with red tassel and gold bells, fireworks and more. You cannot miss the annual Dragon Boat Races with 3,000 paddlers competing in one of the biggest boating competitions. The idea is that of a Chinese dragon in the shape of 12 metre long boats, each boat seating up to 20 paddlers, compete against each other to the sounds of drums beating!
